Cool, I suddenly realized what kind of contest it was in the context of the Western anime community. Therefore, nothing to do with here, but analysis is fun, ha.

--that between a classic which has stood the test of time and which has invited some amount of academic interest, versus a relative unknown in the market, unlicensed, with relatively unpopular fansubs, an anime which IMO deserves academic criticism but is unlikely to get any. Both have difficult narratives that have driven people away, so we're on par there, but the viewer momentum behind Utena is fairly unbeatable. Even if Simoun gets licensed (never...) I doubt it could ever gain market success, despite the claims of fanservice, because of qualities some people call flaws but that its devoted fans relegate to marketing necessity or theoretical beauty.

Again, that had absolutely nothing to do with 300. xD Utena is just more popular here, period. Haha.

RG Utena didn't get licensed until quite a few years after shown on TV, too. I think it's too early to think Simoun or other shoujoai/yuri anime may not get licensed. I really wish that MariMite gets licensed yamiboqe010

Revoluntionary Girl Utena is certainly famous, not only as one of the first real influential shoujoai anime, but also as one of the 3 "Otaku" anime. Every time in anime conventions you can still see plenty of Utena cosplayers even after so many years. Aeru did quite well agaist Utena sama (thumb up).

Saw Utena, Marimite DVDs on shelves too (imported though...sigh...my money...yamiboqe009 )

And those dvds... I'm quite sure they're the original. They have the shiny sticker thing by the board (can't remember what's the name of it).

Try those anime sections right inside Best denki. Sunshine plaza or even Blue max may have them.
